George Takei of Star Trek fame recounts his childhood as a prisoner of war - one of 120,000 interned American citizens of Japanese ancestry in the days following Pearl Harbor.  Even if you think you know this shameful episode in American history, you don't know the half of it.  More than a memoir, Takei infuses  Enemy with the innocent recollections of a child, and the informed retrospective view of an adult.  He honors those who faced great hardships and punishments to oppose the stripping away of their rights as citizens.

When a bookseller says someone is her favorite author, take that as high praise. The Women of the Copper Country is perfectly timed to today's environment, when women's advancements and the rights of workers are under fire. Russell mixes real and historical characters. I had to resist the urge to look up the fates of Annie and other figures until I'd finished it - which only took two days.

This is rich historical fiction based on many real people and events that history has passed over. Who knew the U.S. had its own Joan of Arc? Once you finish Women, I guarantee you'll be searching out information on Annie Clements.

The charismatic presidential candidate comes across as intelligent, caring, and incredibly honest in his memoir.  I liked that it was not strictly chronological. Rather, he uses past experiences to illuminate issues he deals with as mayor.  The controversial firing of an African-American police chief is dealt with in much more detail here than in the sound bytes you may encounter elsewhere.

The section on his coming out, his finding love, and the evolution in thinking his in-laws go through was deeply affecting - I've discussed this book with a customer who said this part brought him to tears.

Deep River Cover Image

Published: Atlantic Monthly Press - July 2nd, 2019

Whatever he writes, Karl Marlantes is so good, he makes me weep.  This Rhodes Scholar and Vietnam veteran was first published later in life. His first novel was Matterhorn, quite possibly THE novel of the Vietnam experience.  (No less than Sebastian Junger called Matterhorn "one of the most profound and devastating novels ever to come out of Vietnam".)

In his second book, he turned to non-fiction.  What It Is Like To Go To War is a harrowing, honest, and thoughtful analysis of American veterans' return to civilian life, and how differently the experiences of Vietnam vets were versus WWII and modern warfare returnees.

I've eagerly awaited a new book from him, and now Deep River arrives.  Sweeping epics are a soft spot for me, and Deep River delivers, spanning 40 years in the Koski family.  From their lives in Finland under Russian persecution, through tragedy and rebellion, we are drawn into their lives.  Siblings are separated, and some reunited as they emigrate to America, building (they hope) something lasting in the wild, forested Northwest.  Characters' lives intersect across the decades as a Finnish community is established in an almost primeval Washington.

Although separated by some years and miles, I couldn't help connecting the Koskis' desperate, hopeful flight with my own father's leap of faith in coming to America.  Deep River is particularly timely today, given the attitudes of some toward immigrants.  Spend even a few pages with the Koskis and their compatriots, and you'll know the courage and desperation it takes to throw oneself on the shores of a strange country, with neither language nor money to soften the landing.  Just... hope.

Ignore the feminine cover – this book is for everyone. I love “fly on the wall” novels; here, we learn all the family secrets, scandals, and alliances as generations of an old Charlotte family give us their perspectives on events.  The Johnstons, led by steely matriarch Jerene, are slowly losing money and standing, but will not go quietly down the drain.  By the end, I loved this family and did not want to leave them.

I'm embarrassed to say I was shocked to learn what Albert Woodfox and fellow prisoners endure in prison.  This book is an eye-opener on, and an indictment of, our prison system. But what shines  through is Woodfox's honesty, growth, and amazing capacity to emerge from 40 years of unjust solitary confinement without rage or bitterness.  Unforgettable - and the last section is worth the book alone.

It's rare these days to find a book on a little-known aspect of WWII.  Lynne Olson brings an amazing heroine, and her brave fellow volunteers, to life and to well-deserved fame.  Marie-Madeleine Fourcade was a trailblazer in so many ways, and it's lucky for France and the Allies that she turned her considerable abilities and courage to running France's largest spy network against the Nazis.

Beautiful Country Burn Again: Democracy, Rebellion, and Revolution Cover Image

Published: Ecco - September 25th, 2018

Beautiful Country Burn Again is arguably the most engaging, scathing, funny, and insightful political book of the year (and we've had a bumper crop of them).  The award-winning novelist covers all the craziness of the 2016 campaign, from every perspective. Bernie rallies, Hillary angst, Republican candidate meltdown - it's all here. And just in case you've forgotten what a roller coaster 2016 was, he alternates his frontline reporting with chapters quickly covering each month's news events.  You may be surprised at what you've forgotten happened in the midst of the rundown to the election.

Fountain posits that America has twice gone through transformative change in response to a national crisis: the Civil War and the Great Depression.  Can we - will we - arise to this third challenge?

If you're a 'constant reader' of Stephen King, you'll love The Outsider - a mix  of classic King imagination and the outstanding mysteries he's done in recent years (the Mr. Mercedes trilogy).  When a horrific crime is committed, rocksolid evidence points to a pillar of the community. Thing is, he has a beyond-rocksolid alibi.  What happens next will keep you glued to the book. It was icing on the cake to see my favorite King character make a significant return about halfway through!

If you like your novels ominous and suspenseful, The Line That Held Us is for you.

David Joy does two incredible things in this novel: he creates a uniquely cruel, sadistic villain - Dwayne will truly stand out among the most horrendous human beings you'll encounter in a book.  David also succeeds in making Dwayne a poignant and sympathetic character. You'll hate yourself for feeling sympathy for him, but you can't help it.

The tension is high from the start, and David ratchets it up as Dwayne and his (sometimes innocent) prey complete their intricate dance.  (Comes out mid-August)

It may be celebrating its 50th anniversary, but True Grit doesn't show its age.

Enjoy it as an action-packed Western, a determined revenge tale, but especially for its ahead-of-her-time protagonist, Mattie Ross.  Once 14-year-old Mattie sets herself on a course, she's not to be denied.

And in its own unique way, it's a splendid love story.

READ THIS BOOK! Imagine hearing the words of the last surviving slave brought to America.  Zora Neale Hurston earned the trust of Cudjo Lewis. Her insistence on keeping faithful to his dialect delayed its publication for years.

Cudjo's story of pre-slavery life in Africa, enslavement, survival, and creating a post-Civil War Africatown is literally priceless. It will haunt you, as will his indomitable spirit. Rest in peace, Kossola.

I've always loved Russo's pitch-perfect rendition of small-town life, especially in the upstate NY area I know well.  Everybody's Fool goes into the top 10 of my favorite books - ever.  No character is perfect, but when I finished the book, I missed every one of them (well, except Roy. There's no love lost there!)

So much happens to the interweaving cast, it was a shock to consider that Fool only covers a couple of days in the life of Bath, NY.  You may not want to live there, but you'd want these folks as your neighbors. (Except Roy).

Be forewarned: this book will make you very, very angry.  Now we may look at early 20th Century attitudes toward radium with shock (radium toothpaste? jockstraps?). Corporate America knew the danger, even if consumers didn't. And no one was more vulnerable than the literally glowing women who painted the in-demand radium dials of watches and instruments.  Their years of suffering and legal conflicts led to safer working conditions for others.  Think of their legacy when someone proposes rolling back worker protections.

Christopher Moore is not for the faint of heart. But if you love wild imagination, hysterically funny and profane dialogue, multiple plot lines that weave together but allow lots of humorous and (did I mention) profane tangents - he's your guy.

Secondhand Souls is a sequel to A Dirty Job. I read SS without having read A Dirty Job with no confusion. But SS does give a few necessary spoilers from the earlier book. So if you have the leisure, do them in order.

I lived in NY's Hudson Valley when this came out, and know how well Carr (also a HV resident) describes it all.  I love historical fiction that mixes true and fictional characters.  NY Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt sets up an unofficial team to investigate a serial killer, in an era in which such a concept is unknown.

The Book of Life: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy #3) Cover Image

Published: Penguin Books - May 26th, 2015

Looking to dive into a world of witches, vampires, and demons? Deborah Harkness' All Souls trilogy, which concludes with The Book of Life, is the richest portrayal of that universe since Dark Shadows (and I say that with pleasure and affection). I don't want to leak any spoilers here – you have to read the trilogy in sequence – but Harkness has
invented a fascinating history for her creatures. This is literary adult fantasy that stays deeply attached to the real world. And if you've read A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night, you'll be very satisfied with the passion, terror, and (yes) humor Harkness uses to bring the saga of the Bishops and Clairmonts to a conclusion.
