After 25 years at Warren Wilson College, first as a faculty member in French Language and literature and in English as a second language composition, and then as vice president for academic affairs and dean of the colleg, I retired from college administration in the summer of 2005 to pursue interests in music and art.

Among my favorite quotations in French is the folowing statement by Francis Picabia:

"
Notre tête est ronde pour permettre à la pensée de changer de direction."

 (Our head is round to permit thought to change direction.)

The arts, too, allow and encourage our "thought to change direction"; they support leaps of faith and also require patience and improvisation - refreshing antidotes to repetitive routine and the daily rush.
